Brief history of STS School / Minto Circle, AMU, Aligarh

S.T.S School, AMU, Aligarh

S.T.S School, AMU, Aligarh has a rich history that dates back to the late 19th century. It all started when Sir Syed Ahmad Khan returned from England on 2nd October 1870 with a vision to establish a college. Recognizing the need for better education among Muslims, he called a meeting in Banaras on 26th October 1870, leading to the formation of The Committee for the Better Diffusion and Advancement of Learning among Mohammadan of India. This committee later became the Mohammadan Anglo Oriental College Fund Committee.
On 11th April 1875, the Fund Committee made the decision to establish a school in Aligarh. The foundation stone of the school, initially known as Madarsatul Uloom, was laid on 24th May 1875 by Maulvi Mohammad Samiullah Khan, the Secretary of the Fund Committee. Under the leadership of Mr. H.G. Siddon, a graduate of Oxford University, the school commenced teaching on 1st June 1875 with eleven students. After two years, Madarsatul Uloom transformed into Mohammadan Anglo Oriental College.

During its early stages, the school had two sections. The Primary Section was housed in Zahoor Ward and the Old Guest House, while the Senior Section was located in Minto Circle. The school obtained affiliation with Calcutta University for Matriculation Examinations in 1877, which later shifted to Allahabad University until 1920.
With the establishment of Aligarh Muslim University through the Aligarh Muslim University Act in 1919, the school was renamed Muslim University High School. At that time, Mr. A.M. Qureshi served as the Principal. The construction of the present building began in 1909 and was named Minto Circle after Lord Minto, the Viceroy of India.
In 1966, the school underwent another name change, this time becoming S.T. High School, in honor of Syedna Tahir Saifuddin, the Chancellor of Aligarh Muslim University. Over the years, the school has expanded its educational offerings and started providing education to students of XI and XII from 1996-1997.
S.T.S. School has maintained a strong national character throughout its history. The school emphasizes high moral values and traditional principles, nurturing disciplined students who abide by the rules and regulations. Its alumni have made significant contributions in various fields, both nationally and internationally, playing pivotal roles in social, political, and cultural spheres.
The school boasts several facilities to support its students’ growth and development. These include a well-equipped library, playgrounds for outdoor games, a Common Room for indoor games, and a computer laboratory that keeps students abreast of the latest technology. With a current student strength of approximately two thousand, the school also provides hostel facilities within the campus to accommodate students from outside Aligarh.
