The School started in 1889 in an old building by Maulana Bahadur Ali and his associate. It was initially named Anjuman-e Islamia Primary School. Later on, it became Mohammadan Anglo Oriental Collegiate, City Branch in 1919 and then became Amu City School. The School then shifted to its present building in 1928. Prominent figures such as Sahabzada Aftab Ahmad, Maulvi Samiullah Khan, Maulvi Abdul Khalique, Deputy Habibullah Khan, Abdul Majeed Khwaja, and Alhaj Obaidur Rehman Khan Sherwani were close associates of Sir Syed Ahmad Khan and contributed significantly to the establishment of the School.

Maulana Tufail Ahmad Manglori was the first founder manager of the School. The School has been catering to the educational needs of the Aligarh City population, particularly belonging to underprivileged, middle, and lower-middle classes of society.

The School currently offers education from Grade I to V (Primary Section) and Grade VI to XII. It has approximately 1700 students enrolled. The School prepares students for the Secondary School and Senior Secondary School Certificate Examinations conducted by the AMU Board. The School serves as a feeder institution for higher education at the University. The students are provided with tutorial/remedial classes, counseling, and preparation for the National Talent Search Examination, Science, and Mathematics Olympiads. They are also exposed to the external environment through tours/excursions.

The School provides opportunities for games, sports, and creative activities. It also offers facilities such as a swimming club, gymnasium club, and other amenities available to university students.
